PLN 4 part two

When it comes to the question of what it means to be a digital citizen, something very important that I believe this article brought up is that, when it comes to being a digital citizen, the Arab people have, “also demanded their rights while also accepting their responsibilities.” I believe this is a huge component to what it means to be a citizen of the 21st century because it shows that, yes we may feel as if we are free on the internet to say and do what ever we feel, however, while given these freedoms we must be aware that there are consequences that may come as well. I do not think that our schools are completely prepared to meet the needs of the digital world. Although I think the schools are doing a great job intergrading activities from the internet that help enhance students learning, there are problems with people saying and doing things on the internet that is open for everyone to see. People feel as if they can hide behind technology, and do not have to pay the consequences of their actions if they do something offensive, and our schools need to teach the students that this is not the case. An example of this is what we discussed in class, when a student made a group on Facebook about  a teacher that she really did not like, calling her the worst teacher. This student felt as if she was expressing her freedom of speech, however, mostly did not realize how offensive it was at the time. Going along with this, I also do not feel as if the schools know how to determine what is simply a practice of free speech and what people should be punished for. The article stated that, “ordinary people claiming their rights of free expression and assembly and using the platform of the new technologies to make this happen.” The question that I develop from this is, how free is the freedom of speech in the digital world, where your words are set in stone and can be shown to anyone. Another important point that was discussed in this article that we have not yet developed is that in real life situations, when crimes are committed off the internet, such as bullying, they are typically reported right away. This, however, is not second nature to Internet users yet, and something that also needs to be implemented in the school system.

I think its very important to have a discussion on what people feel is proper educate in the technology world, because not everyone has the same feelings and beliefs. Technology is becoming such a large part of our lives, and because it still new and developing, people do not know what is considered acceptable or not. This is why I think proper educate should be discussed consistently to keep everyones opinions in mind.

I think this message is very important for teachers to keep in mind when it comes to their digital footprints. They are setting an example for their students, so if they do not make sure that their information, pictures, and posts on the internet are offensive so some people, there are plenty of parents and other people out there who will turn these teachers in and get them in trouble. If they do not continuously check their privacy, they may not realize that something offensive is open to the public.

This tweet is very important to teachers because it makes us realize that the people who are using the internet are now getting younger and younger,  making it imperative that we begin to teach them digital identity as young as possible. This tweet provides a link to an online book that helps teach these children how to be respectful on the internet and aware of digital footprint.

Temple Grandin discussed the fact that there are many people who have autism that are visual thinkers, however not every child with autism will be a visual thinker. This point reminds us that there are many different ways people learn, and not everyone is able to learn the same way, therefore you must differentiate your teaching to accommodate to the specific students needs. This will help me as a teacher to be aware of the need to display lessons in more ways than one, and to realize when a student doesn’t understand something, and try to teach it to them in a different way.

Another topic that was discussed is that some people are considered to be pattern thinkers who think more abstract, such as engineers. These students may have problems with reading and if you, as a teacher, this is very important to be aware of. If you are not and come across a student such as this, you may simply dismiss them as an unintelligent person in every subject, because the students may never be able to understand what you are asking on an assessment due to the fact that they have to read the questions it to answer the question. This problem can be solved by using technology like the guest speaker showed us so the students can possibly hear a voice recording of what the questions are asking, ect. This will allow you to then asses them on the topic that they have been learning rather on their ability to read.
Lastly, the most important thing to remember from this video as both a teacher and just a member of society, is that some of the most brilliant people who have developed outstanding inventions, would most likely be considered to have some form of autism today. This tells us that we must find what it is that interest these students in order to utilize their intelligences, just like any other student. Labeling a student as unintelligent simply because they are not as social or bright in one subject area may make the world miss out on an amazing invention that they are capable of creating.

There are many valuable points that were brought up throughout the PBS video regarding the way technology is viewed in schools today and impact that it has on learning. Something that was mentioned in the beginning of the video is that we need to stop being driven by fear of technology, and that we can not teach teachers the way that we used to because technology plays such a vital role in learning in todays society. I agree with this statement because technology has become more prevalent in the schools than it was even just a couple of years ago. There are so many teachers who have been teaching in the classroom for a very long time who would rather use traditional ways of teaching rather than learning how to implement technology because they have a sort of fear of the unknown, never learning how to implement it in their lessons. The ways to teach students to become a teacher is defiantly changing. The technology class that my Special Education cohort is in currently was most likely not offered to the teachers that I had as I was growing up when they were in college. This is just an example of the ways educating new teachers has been changing over the years and as the technology adapts, our teaching style must do the same.

An important point that one of the teachers in the video brought up that I think is very important to remember when I am teaching is that they implement lap tops, making it possible for the class to put them away when it is not the best tool to use. Teachers must remember that technology can be a very useful tool, however there are also times that it might not be the best way to teach the class, which is when the teacher must take it upon themselves to make sure they do not over use technology. This may be a hard line to draw, deciding when technology is the best tool to use and when something else can be more beneficial, however I think that being highly education about the different options that are out there will help make the decision a little more easier for me as a teacher.

One of the classes in the video used games as a way to teach the students the new material and assess them on what they have learned. An interesting point that they brought up is that the students can’t finish the game until they actually learn the material. The aspect of them game allows the children to be competitive, and want to win, therefore want to learn the material. As a teacher, it is important to remember this because if the parents are unsure about their children playing games in the classroom, you must be the one to make sure they are aware of the many learning possibilities it brings to the table and explain it to them. Children want to learn if they are interested in what they are doing, and they will not focus as much to the lesson if they are not interested. Also it is important to remember that technology is not replacing the teachers, however it is a tool for them to use. Many people think that the teachers don’t have to explain lessons anymore or create worksheets and activities for the students to do, however this is not true. The teacher is playing a very vital part in the classroom when it comes to using technology because it is their responsibility to make sure that the classroom is using it properly and are that they getting as much out of the learning experience as they can.

Observation of Learning

My view on todays world is that we are always learning, both inside and outside of the classroom, by using technology. Our school systems have adapted new ways to turn in assignments online, read books off of your computer, and communicate with other people through many different forms of technology.
